How Do We Identify Our Federal (US) Highways?

In 1919, a young engineer named Thomas H. Macdonald was appointed Chief of the new Federal Bureau of Public Roads. The Bureau was created by Congress in response to the rapidly growing popularity of the automobile and the correspondingly terrible condition of roads in the country at that time.
